VILAYA TOURS
We highly recommend if time allows, to visit some of the other attractions in Northern Peru. Particularly in the Trujillo, Chiclayo and Cajamarca areas.
In Chiclayo in one or two days you can see a wealth of pre-inca remains such as Sipan, Tucume (photo above) and Ventarron. The Royal Tombs Museum is an essential part of a tour to Chiclayo, to see the objects recovered from the Moche tombs discovered in Sipan since 1987. The museum of Sican is another great museum also with many gold and silver objects.
In Trujillo in one day you can see the Huaca de la Luna and Sol (Temples of the Sun and Moon), adobe pyramids made by the Moche. Also worth seeing is the enormous adobe city of Chan Chan made by the Chimu.
In Cajamarca, a half day tour can take you to the Ventanillas de Otuzco, the Rescue Room that allegedly held the last true Inca and the enjoy this pretty colonial city, famous for being the starting point of the Spanish Conquest of the Inca Empire. If more time allows then the Aqueduct of Cumbe Mayo high above the city is another great place to visit.
Another extension is to take the road from Chachapoyas to Tarapoto stopping off at Moyobamba. Using this city as a base you can visit the forest reserve of Tingana. A one day tour gives you the chance to see, snakes, monkeys, sloths and many birds of the higher Amazon plain. Due to its altitude, at 850m this can be considered a “light” Amazon Forest experience with less heat than the lower forest. The tour starts early and ends mid afternoon giving you time to enjoy the thermal pools just outside the city.
